mJangale ( is a full-featured education solution leveraging mobile technology to improve pre-school and primary education in Senegal backed by a strong pedagogical and sustainable model. Jangale means learning in Wolof, one of the local languages of Senegal. Its goal is to improve education in Senegal in terms of skills in literacy and numeracy and relationship between parents and schools by leveraging the use of mobile phones. Each “mobile kit” for schools consists of: 1) a fleet of phones and help desk support; 2) engaging mobile apps on basic phones or smartphones that teach literacy and numeracy with local content, give instant feedback, and collect data on pupils’ learning progress; 3) training, coaching and incentivizing teachers to use and contribute to the solution; and 4) reaching out to parents and involve them in the learning of their children. Projectors and solar charging stations are optionally added to the kits. Parts of mJangale have already been piloted in Dakar (in collaboration with ChildFund) with great success and enthusiasm from its participants and the Ministry of Education of Senegal. These kits can be bought by schools, NGOs, international organizations, or via crowdfunding, and the apps are also sold in the app stores. While initially focused on Senegal, mJangale can be extended to other countries.

mJangale was a winner of the FIRE Africa Awards (2014, e-Development category). It was presented at the mEducation Alliance Symposium (2013; Washington, D. C., USA), Mobile For Development (M4D) Conference (2014; Dakar, Senegal), UNESCO Mobile Learning Week (2014; Paris, France), and the Social Enterprise Conference at Harvard University (2014, Cambridge, MA; USA).
